DoanneGeorge Washington Doane - The Right Reverend Doane, (pronounced Dunn) 2nd Bishop of New Jersey and close personal friend of James P. Allaire, presided over the wedding ceremony of Maria Allaire and Thomas Andrews in 1836. Bishop Doane is famous for his various hymnal contributions to the Episcopalian church,
leaving behind a rich legacy within the church and New Jersey alike. The Right Reverend, as Seen in this portrait from 1835, was amidst the planning of his 1837 all-girls school, Saint Mary’s in Burlington, New Jersey. During this busy time, and with a young son of his own at home, Doane most likely rode in on horseback
the night before, not only to preside over the ceremony, but as a guest of honor as well (thus the absence of staff and traditional cap). The highly ornate vestment of the Bishop is called a Chasuble. Doane’s Chasuble was most likely in the “Fiddleback” shape, a style which had become increasingly popular during the early to mid 19th century.
