The Howell Works Bakery | The Howell Works General Store

In order to take care of the needs of his employees, as well as those of his own family, James Allaire established both a General Store, reputed to be the largest in the State at the time, and a Bakery. The General Store, or Howell Works Company Store as it was known, was not only a place to purchase necessary items, but also a place to gather, learn the local gossip, pick up the mail or even buy passage to New York on an Allaire Steam Packet. Come and explore these historic shops today and see how a 19th Century iron worker and his family lived and did their marketing.
