Allaire Village, Inc. is continually expanding its Outreach and Cooperative Venture Programs to include site visits by volunteers and paid staff of the Historic Village at Allaire, and by members of the Board of Trustees of Allaire Village, Inc. Through establishing contacts with other historic sites and museums, participation in events held at other historic and educational sites and facilities and by establishing working relationships with other historic sites, libraries, museums and educational organizations and facilities and expanding its Student Tour Program, Allaire Village, Inc. hopes to accomplish its goals of increased expansion.

Cooperative Ventures

The purpose of the multi-faceted Cooperative Venture Program at the Historic Village at Allaire is to provide administration with a better understanding of the operations of other historic sites, to furnish volunteers and staff with a fuller sense of the time period during which the Howell Works Company was in operation, and to present interpreters with the opportunity to observe the methods used for Historic Interpretation and craft demonstrations at other sites.

During the 2004 Season, volunteer, paid staff and members of the Board of Trustees visited such sites as Old Salem, in Winston Salem, NC; Colonial Williamsburg located in Williamsburg, VA; Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT; The Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site in Saugus, MA; Clermont State Historic Site in Germantown, NY and Historic Speedwell in Morristown, NJ; Old Sturbridge Village located in Sturbridge, MA; Shelbourne Farms and Shelbourne Village in Shelbourne, VT; Napanne Settlement in Napanne, IL; End of the Oregon Trail Museum and Interpretive Center, Oregon City, OR; the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strausburg, PA; the The Smithsonian Foundation, and Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site located in Elverson, PA.

During these site visits staff and volunteers seek to research forms of historic interpretation, gain knowledge into the backgrounds of their characters, gain a better understanding of both social and world view of the time period and expand their understanding of the trades and crafts that they may be involved.

Along with this, volunteers and staff members have also made site visits to The Monmouth County Historical Association located in Freehold, NJ; the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA ; the Huguenot Society of New Rochelle, located in New Rochelle, NY; The New Rochelle Public Library, the New York City Archives; and the Monmouth County Archives, located in Manalapan, NJ. While at these sites, volunteers and staff members conducted research into the various aspects of the Historic Village at Allaire, including its general history, the history of the persons involved in the Howell Works Company, the business enterprises of James P. Allaire and 19th Century life. Allaire Village, Inc. plans on increasing its Research Program to include more site visits within the next five years.

Outreach Programs

Allaire Village, Inc. and the Historic Village at Allaire has witnessed a marked increase in the number of Student Tours during the 2004 Season. The Historic Village at Allaire has, as well, increased participation in the number of special events at other sites which include Archives Day, sponsored by the Monmouth County Library System, Steamboat Days, sponsored by Clermont State Historic Site and the Spirit of the Jerseys Annual History Fair held at Washington's Crossing State Park in Titusville, NJ. Future plans include participation in the 2007 bicentennial Celebration of the first running of the Clermont at Clermont State Historic Site and the bicentennial celebration in 2009 being sponsored by the State of New York.

It is the hope of Allaire Village, Inc. to further educate the general public in the life and career of James P. Allaire and of early 19th Century Life through site visits as well as to broaden the amount of research held by the Historic Village at Allaire in order to best serve the public through knowledgeable interpreters and extensive resources.
